"mornings on 2" begins right now. ktvu news starts right now with breaking news. >> we have been following breaking news in hayward, where a person was struck and killed on 880. the deadly crash has created a huge backup at a major artery. you can see a couple of lanes blocked there. tara moriarty is there. coming up two minute, she'll have more. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, i ducked outside, it was kind of gloomy. it's warm. >> it is warm. mid-60s. oakland, hayward, san leandro, also on the coast from half moon bay, pacifica. about 63. daly city, 63. mist, drizzle yesterday than

today. a few breaks in the low cloud deck. the low is all that we had yesterday, it's already flying down to southern california. so we don't have to worry about that anymore, although it will give a breeze here. mid-60s for some. there's hayward, 66. san francisco actually 62. looks like they will set a record warm minimum. water temperatures really warm, 60, 64. you combine that with a south wind and that equals mild lows. 60s for many. some of the higher elevations are in the 50s. south at 12 at sfo, sowst gusting to 16 at sfo. south and hayward. that will do it. low clouds will burn back. we'll see sunshine today. temperatures are running below average near the coast and bay. they are near average to above. we call it fog. it's a low cloud deck. 60s, 70s around the bay. here's sal. we started with a very

serious problem on 880 that's caused a huge traffic jam. the location, southbound 880 at industrial. still two right lanes taken away by a fatal crash. we'll find out more about what may have caused this crash. we have a reporter on the scene and we're gonna get details in a moment. but we'll tell you that traffic on 880 is backed up before highway 238 into san leandro. this is a really long backup. it's getting worse as minutes go on southbound 880. now it looks like there is a minor crash on the other side of the freeway, northbound 8880, which is not affecting much. but we can see it here. the bay bridge is backed up for 30 minutes. 580 is backed up getting to the area. this morning on northbound 101 in san jose and 280 and 85, just moderately heavy. as i just mentioned, we're on the scene of that major

trafficup on interstate 880 in hayward after a pedestrian was hit and killed. tara moriarty just spoke to the chp about how that person ended up on the freeway. tara? >> reporter: well, new details are emerging as to what happened to the man on the overcrossing that's above and behind me that led up to him being killed. hayward police may be investigating this is a possible homicide. you can see that two lanes are blocked off here and traffic definitely backed up. this all unfolded around quarter to 5:00 on the overpass at industrial boulevard over 880 southbound. a big rig driver struck a man. we don't know if he hit a person. he knew he hit something. so he pulled over a couple of exthe exits down. he explains what he saw to police. police try to piece this together. >> he was unsure. there might have been a verbal confrontation with somebody. i don't know and then -- which

resulted in this gentleman going over the overcrossing. that's still under investigation. >> reporter: that's why hayward police are involved? >> yes, ma'am. >> reporter: again, two southbound lanes are shut down on 880. we don't know when the freeway will be completely clear. i can see that the coroner is still on the scene here and they still have these lanes blocked off. traffic is backed up for about 15 minutes through this stretch. you can take hesperian or mission boulevard as an alternate since they run parallel to 880. we're live in hayward, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we'll be checking back for updates. thank you, tara. police in fairfield are searching for a man who they believe is responsible for three sexual assault cases in two days. on august 2nd, police say a man made sexual comments to a woman walking near northwood drive. about 15 minutes later, a man came up behind a 16-year-old girl who was jogging near oak brook drive and sexually assaulted her. the next day, police say a

woman jogging near somer grove drive was also sexually assaulted. here is a sketch of the suspect. in all three cases, the victim describe the man as white, 18 to 20 years old, about 5'7" to 5'8". he has a slim build, short light brain or reddish hair and a thin beard. if you have any information, call hayward police. continuing coverage now of the ongoing situation in ferguson, missouri. according to a missouri state police captain, last night was a turning point. he says protesters were out early and peacefully walked the streets. he also said they went home early making it easier for police to spot those making trouble. at least 46 people were arrested last night. the town has faced days of violent protests since the august 9th deadly police shooting of 18-year-old michael brown. coming up later in the newscast, we'll go live to ferguson, where attorney general eric holder is expected this morning to meet with

people conducting an independent investigation into brown's death. 7:06. police in vallejo investigating two suspicious deaths after the bodies of a man and a woman were found on a boat. that boat was docked at the vallejo municipal harbor. now, police went there yesterday morning after a family member called, saying there hadn't heard from the woman or her -- they hadn't heard from the woman or her husband for several days. they had been living on the boat. they had obvious signs of trauma. we don't know their names. the main fig in the fbi sting involving lee land -- figure in the fbi sting involving leland yee is due in court. raymond chow is due in court. earlier this month, prosecutors added racketeering. he already faces a long list of

charges that include money laundering and a conspiracy to illegally sell alcohol and tobacco. a san francisco father is warning others after encounter with a coyote that was too close for comfort. >> stay with me. go the [bleep] out of here. >> this is video of lands gin -- lands inn. he shot it after the coyote came after his daughter. he managed to scare it off. but he managed to scare it off again. >> as we came around the corner and luna was in front of me a good distance, i saw a coyote see her and go running toward her. >> that was very scary. >> he posted the video on social media to warn other parents. park officials say there have been no problems, recent problems with coyotes at lands

inn. another sighting, in lake chabot. wildlife experts say coyotes are not typically aggressive. if you encounter one, make noise and raise your arms to scare it off. some brands of peanut and  almond butter are peaking pulled from shelves because of possible salmonella contamination. janine de la vega is live with the specific brands involved. >> reporter: good morning. here at whole foods, they've removed the almond butter off their shelves. the fda has issued a voluntary recall because of health concerns. about 40 different peanut and almond butters are involved in the recall. the haynes group announced the groups for products because they've been potentially contaminated with salmonella. the items include arrowhead mills, maranatha, safeway open

nature, trader joe's raw and whole foods roasted almond butter. the company reports four people have reported being sick. >> it's pretty scary. we eat a lot of peanut butter and we assume, especially when it is organic, it's made as a higher level and is safe. >> reporter: the company's president said we are initiating a recall and are working closely with the fda to proactively remedy the situation. stores have been told to remove the products pr shelves and warehouses. if you have an affected product, call the manufacturer. don't take it back to the store. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and you can check your website, ktvu.com, for the full list of products being recalled. that includes the used-by dates. you can find that list under our hot topics heading. the city of vallejo is marking a major milestone in

time coming up on 7:14. we're following developing news out of the middle east, where an american journalist beheaded by isis militants may not be be the last. as kyla campbell report, isis says they want the air strikes stopped in iraq. >> reporter: isis released a video of the journalist being beheaded, james foley. these are still images taken from the video in which foley reads a message likely written by his captors blaming america for his death and the militant beheads him. foley's family has not heard from him since he disappeared from northwest syria in another

of 20 -- in november of 2012. in this video, another american journalist is threatened if the u.s. does not end military operations in iraq. i just spoke with someone from the conservative heritage foundation and he says the u.s. has very few options accept to continue targeting isis. >> you have to feel for the family and every death is a tragedy, but there are millions of lives at strike here in that country. >> reporter: my white house contacts said president obama is getting updates on the situation while in martha's vineyard. he is not scheduled to speak so far today. now, why experts say isis is a threat to the united states homeland. i'm working on those details for you at 8:15. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. james foley's mother posted an emotional statement on facebook. she said "we've never been prouder of our son, jim.

he gave his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the syrian people. we implore the kidnappers to spare the lives of the remaining hostages." the obama administration says it will change the way passengers can ask to be taken 0 off the no fly list. this is after it's ruled that the current system is unconstitutional. the justice department will make changes in six months. as of last year, there were 48,000 people on that list. the dmv offices across the state are getting ready for a rush of undocumented immigrants expected to aplay for driver's licenses in the next year. undocumented immigrants living in california will be allowed to apply for a driver's license starting january 1st. sonoma county dmv officials held a community forum in santa rosa to explain the new law. officials are urging undocumented immigrants to be

prepared and study for the test so they can pass the first time. that's because they say it could be difficult to get a second appointment due to the number of people who are expected to apply. 7:16. a hostage drama continues in a suburb of chicago. two children and two adults are still being held hostage at a home in that chicago suburb, almost 21 hours after a police standoff began. four other children were freed by the gunman in the town of harvey and s.w.a.t. teams are still negotiating with the suspects. police say the stand joch started after -- standoff started after police interrupted a burglary at the home. two police officers were shot in an exchange of gunfire as they responded but they are expected to survive. just a couple of months until the november election. governor brown has agreed to one debate with his republican challenger, neil cash carry. the governor holds a 20-point

lead in the latest polls. now the one debate is set for thursday, september 4th in sacramento, two months before the election. it's also about one month before ballots are mailed out to oat -- to voters. chp did a good job considering the circumstances of this horrible crash where pun -- where one person was killed. southbound 880 near the industrial onramp there where the icon is. southbound traffic, however, is backed up from marina boulevard and all of the lanes reopened, it will take a while for the traffic to unwind. that means if you are trying to get to the san mateo bridge, it's gonna be tough. 238 is backed up on 580. it has been having a big effect. let's go to san francisco, hearing of an accident

northbound 101, north of 280. it's backing up traffic north of candlestick trying to get into downtown san francisco. i want to show you the traffic on 237 is very slow. we had an accident westbound at mathilda. they are moving it to the shoulder. but it was an injury crash involving a dump truck and other vehicles. 237 is terrible. give yourself plenty of extra time. no negotiating that freeway. that's hard for me to say, i guess. westbound bay bridge, 25-minute drive time into san francisco before you make it to the city side of the bridge. now, let's go to steve. it happens to me all of the time. i said shierra instead of sierra about an hour ago. >> yeah. the lows on the coast are usually what they see for high temperatures. they are about 63, 65. why is that happening? there's a lot of low clouds. there's plenty going on. warm lows, mid-60s for many. mostly sunny this afternoon. breezy and mild.

a little warmer. a very quiet pattern. ho-hum. for what it's worth before i get going, for what it's worth, one forecast model puts rain on us around september 2nd, 3rd. .5 rain at ukiah. we'll see. remember, i talked about this and the model is consistent. we'll see. water temperatures from about point reyes south are around 60, 64. north you can kind it fooler. you get a south wind along with warm ocean temperatures. that's why the lows are mild. half moon bay 10 gusting to 16. so daly city, half moon bay, pacifica are sitting at 63 degrees. hayward sitting at about 66 because they have a south wind. san jose also. livermore has a west wind. there's a few west winds. gilroy, 62. 63 east san jose. 62 san jose. sunnyvale, 63. fremont, 62. the higher elevations are cooler but they are dealing with a lot of fog, especially up in the santa cruz mountains. you can see the low cloud deck. there's plenty here.

the low which went right by us yesterday, cooled us down but it was not strong enough to -- or dynamic enough to break up the fog bank. it's there. it will retreat back. but 66 hayward. oakland airport 65. there's 63 half moon bay. san francisco is actually 62. it looks like a record warm minimum temperature. that could be the fifth one in the last 20 days because the ocean temperatures are warm and the humidity is high. 63 novato. 63 concord, 63 livermore. 63 reno, ukiah and monterey are all close. very strange weather. chicago, 74. the thunderstorm activity last night looks like it might pick up. we have an evening game. giants and the cubs. look what's rumbling to the west. thunderstorm complex, maybe it will go through early. but there is a lot out there for severe weather. that's the prime time area. for us, low clouds. we'll head back to the coast. any shower or thunderstorm activity up in the sierra will

go south as the low goes south. local drizzle. sunny inland, 70 -- these are way below average. 86, 87 for concord, livermore. oakland, san francisco are right where they should be temperaturewise and very mild temperatures from the lows to the highs. won't change that much but they are well above average for some. breezy, warmer. a very quiet pattern as we go into the next couple of days. maybe warmer towards sunny. i don't know if you stayed up for the giants' game. the giantses may follow a protest with mlb. a soggy downpour that led to the loss. bruce bochy is furious. and people rush to help after a driver plows into a cafe and one man's face-to-face encounter with the suspect on the run.

high-speed chase that ended with a crash into a sausalito coffee shop, all caught on camera. people were sitting outside fred's place yesterday morning when a car going about 70 miles an hour smashed into two cars and then the coffee shop. the driver of the speeding car was fleeing marin county sheriff's deputies. he had a woman and a 2-year-old boy in the car with him. after the crash, he jumped out of the car and ran. >> i just turned around and saw him right here and he just -- he looked nervous. and so -- i thought, there he is. there is the guy. we just chased him and he went on the roof and we caught him. >> the suspect identified as 20- year-old derrick mccann was caught by witnesses and held until police arrived. he was held on multiple injury charges. police say it's a miracle nobody was killed. the most-talked about pitcher in baseball will be pitching today at the little

league world series. there she is. 13-year-old monet davis from my hometown of philadelphia. she's also on the koefner of "sports illustrated." she's the first little leaguer to ever appear on the cover after becoming the first girl in little league world series history to throw a shut out. the cover says remember her name, as if anybody could forget. her mom is very excited. >> one thing, i'm gonna get a thousand copies of it. i'm gonna get a lot. >> monet is tremendous. she's a celebrity now. she's doing national tv interviews. we're talking about her on ktvu. she's getting wees from the flawd -- tweets from the first lady. if her team wins today in las vegas, they move on to the u.s. championship game. the nfl is reportedly telling musicians they will have to pay up to perform in the 2015 super bowl halftime

san jose and hayward which is why the lows are up here. the low cloud deck is still here. the higher clouds are gone. low clouds, sunny and breezy. local drizzle. not as bad as yesterday. sunny inland. temperatures below normal. near average coast and bay. here's sal. we've been talking about it all morning since it happened just after 5:15. southbound 880 that crash has cleared where we had an earlier fate there, southbound 880 at industrial. the traffic is backed up to marina. the traffic is better after that if u are driving from the east bay to san jose. it looks good. 237 we had an accident in -- in sunnyvale near mathilda and that is really causing slow traffic on 237 as i pull it close here, you can see just how slow it is driving from basically right from interstate 880 out to 101 is a slow drive. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza, it's backed up all the way out to the macarthur maze.

25 to 30-ment drive into san francisco. northbound 101 near 280 had a crash near. traffic backing up towards candlestick. southbound looks good to the peninsula and the airport. back to the desk. we're finding out more about a fire overnight that sent a grandmother to the hospital on miramar avenue. alex savidge is joining us live to tell us more about how the fire started and what we know about the condition of that grandmother. alex? >> reporter: well, dave, good morning to you. good news for this grandmother. she did suffer smoke inhalation during this early-morning fire and had to be taken to the hospital. but her family tells me she was released a short time ago. the 77-year-old woman, according to firefighters, took in quite a bit of smoke as flames filled up her home early this morning. the fire started around 1:30 here at home on the 500 block of miramar avenue. there were four people inside at the time.

all of them family members. they say they woke up when they heard what sounded like an explosion, a banging sound coming from the ground floor of the garage. they quickly realized there was a fire and everyone got out. firefighters moved in and knocked down the flames fairly quickly, then they treated this elderly woman and ultimately took her to the hospital. all in all a very frightening moment for the family. >> on a scale of one to nine, definitely a ten. more scared for grandma. she's the leader of the house. had to make sure she's safe and she's recovering. we're all happy. now we move on and put everything back together. >> reporter: along with the people inside this home this morning, there was one dog who had to be rescued by firefighters and that dog was treated here at the scene, given oxygen and is expected to be okay. a fire captain also told me that they are looking into the cause of this fire, the cause is unclear right now. but an arson investigator was called in just to figure out exactly how it started. i'm told that is standard any

time anyone is hurt in a fire. the family says they do have insurance to cover repairs. there is quite a bit of repair work that has to be done. they will be staying with relatives for the time being. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. 7:34. there is a surprising new development in the case of the 2-year-old girl killed on friday night in a hit-and-run accident in san francisco. police have made an arrest but it's not the. driver. police arrested the -- it's not the driver. police arrested the aunt of the girl. police say 25-year-old loriysha gage walked in the busy street and left the girl to go back to the curb and get the toddler's twin brother. >> the investigation showed some evidence that there was some child neglect that resulted in the death of the 2- year-old toddler.

>> now, the little girl's aunt has been booked into county jail on felony child endangerment charges. police are searching for the hit-and-run driver. we have surveillance video to show you right now. it's a white or light colored 1990s model toyota camry, honda or lexus. take a look at it. the car has dark-colored buppers and rims. if you have any information call san francisco police right away. 7:36. an israeli owned container ship managed to avoid protesters at port of oakland. yesterday, the ship left the dock appearing to head toward los angeles. it went outside the golden gate but then it turned around and came back and docked at a different terminal at the port of oakland. that's where the unloading began last night. long shore workers had refused to unload the ship in previous days because of the presence of protesters and police. they said they didn't feel safe. when protesters found out about the ship's return last night,

they regrouped at the new location. the propalestinian protesters targeted the ship because of israel's action in gaza. we're learning more about a possible ebola case right here in northern california. pam cook joins us in the studio with more -- with more on the patient and the precautions being taken. >> the person who may be infected is peaking kept in isolation in sacramento. that patient is at kaiser permanente hospital in south sacramento. but the hospital says at this point, this is just a precaution. there are reports that the person recently traveled to west africa. but we spoke to an infectious disease specialist who said people should not panic. >> it's hard to get. you would have to be really in close contact. >> right now, the patient in sacramento is waiting for test results. a blood sample has been sent for the centers for disease

control. but it could take several days to get the results. a woman in new mexico who recently traveled to sierra leone, another region phone for the ebola voice is waiting for her test results. we'll have more comment from health officials in our next hour of "mornings on 2." tori and dave? >> thank you. pen simms are sharpened, school supplies are packed. it's the first day of school for several schools unless bay area. brian flores is live where classes begin this morning. hard to believe. >> reporter: it is hard to believe. we're live here at novato high school where the first bell is about to ring probably in the next couple of minutes or so. take a look at the sign right below the novato sign. it says thank you for slowing down. that's the message that many law enforcement agencies not just here in novato but many districts are saying. a lot of drivers getting used to the kids being back to school here this morning.

i'm here with sergeant redell. good morning. >> reporter: talk about the districts. >> we have the high schools who start out -- we're trying to get the safety message out through enforcement and education at the high school, it tends to be enforcement oriented because they are driving now. >> reporter: talk about the flow of traffic. many parents may not be aware of the flow of traffic and the problems it may cause for other drivers who don't have kids in the school. >> that's correct. especially starting school on a wednesday. some people are not aware it's happening. a lot of the feeder streets. they are residential streets 25- mile-an-hour speed limits. people are coming into school. they may be running late and speeds increase. we have other streets that run along novato high school where the speed limits are 40 miles

missouri state police are calling it a turning point after multiple nights of violent protests in ferguson. the demonstrations started after the deadly police shooting of 18-year-old michael brown on august 9th. ourer is in ferguson where a grand jury is set to decide whether to charge the officer accused of shooting brown. >> reporter: tori, good morning to you. it's a pivotal day here in ferguson. police say there has been a turning point and while there was some violence here in the streets overnight, what we've seen is protesters really try to take specific steps to stop the fear and violence today in the streets. this community will get a visit from the nation's top law enforcement official, attorney general air irk holder.

welcome back. this week san jose police started a new lan to deal with low staffing calls. they are training civilians for nonemergency calls. we received a sneak peek. this is the training for 25 new recruits. police say the civilian officers will respond to burglary, car thefts, vandalism, traffic reports and even missing persons cases. civilians will not respond to calls with an active suspect and they will only be armed with pepper spray. police say this is needed to help cope with the shortage of officers caused by cuts to retirement benefits. the civilian officers will be paid $54,000 a year. they may start hitting the streets in just a couple of minutes. a little boy suffering from

earlier problems. like 237 westbound. it's improving a little bit. we had an injury accident about an hour ago, westbound 237 in sunnyvale. that's been cleared but traffic is backed up way back into milpitas downtown. passing 880 and continuing past here all the way to sunnyvale and it gets better when you get to highway 101. let's go to the maps now. i want to show you the traffic on 80 westbound is busy as you drive through to the richmond freeway and then if you are driving on the east shore, you see a 26-minute drive time coming through. no major issues. if you are driving on the 580 commute westbound, it's very slow and then 880 southbound into fremont it will will continue to be slow as you head down to the south bay. 101 northbound is also slow coming up past 880 and into sunnyvale that way. and finally, the bay bridge is backed up for about a 25 to 30- minute delay. this was the scene on 880ny ward about an hour ago as the chp cleared the scene of a

possible homicide. they say a pedestrian was hit and killed near industrial parkway. we have been following this developing news since it was first reported around 5:1515 this morning. ktvu's tara moriarty is now at the hayward police station, where officers are investigating how the person killed ended up on the freeway. >> reporter: well, police are now saying that the man on the freeway overpass jumped. but why he jumped could determine whether or not this case is classified as a suicide or a homicide. we are being told that police are investigating it as a potential homicide. now, all of this unfolded around 4:45 this morning. a man on the overpass at industrial boulevard over 880 southbound fell into traffic. a big rig driver struck him. he was instantly killed. two lanes were shut down for about three hours. officers say they do have a witness. they are looking into whether some sort of fight took place before the man jumped. >> well, if he jumped because he was trying to evade someone

woman walking near northwood drive. and then a man came up behind a 16-year-old girl jocking near oak brook and sexually assaulted her. the next day, a woman jogging near summer grove drive was sexually assaulted. in all three cases, the victims described the man as white, between 18, 20 years old, about 5'7", 5'8". he has a slim build, short light rain or reddish hair and a thin period -- beard. if you have information, call police. a main figure in the main fbi investigation in the indictment of leland yee is due back in court. raymond chow is due back in court so lawyers can review the evidence in this sweeping corruption case. earlier, a federal grand jury added racketeering charges

this is -- what you are looking at is the israeli owned ship leaving the port of oakland. right now, it's in the san francisco bay. it's right near at&t park. now, that ship has been the target of propalestinian protesters since last saturday. the protesters had been able to keep that ship from unloading the cargo until yesterday. that's when it left its dock. it looked like it was heading to los angeles. it went outside the golden gate bridge but it turned back, came back and docked at a different terminal at the port of oakland. now, that's where the unloading began last night, longshoremen had refused to unload it in previous days because protesters and police were out there. when the protesters found out the ship had come back last night, they regrouped at the

let's talk about weather and traffic. steve is right there. >> thank you, sir. a south wind for the peninsula. san mateo coast also parts of the santa clara valley. then it turns westerly farther north. but that southerly breeze equals warm, mild conditions. 67 at 8:00 a.m. is warm. that's 8:00 a.m. hayward, 65 oakland. 63 half moon bay. 63 novato. mid-60s all over the plate. one area of low pressure came close to us yesterday is now visiting southern california. the bigger picture shows it will stay down there for a day. thunderstorm activity looks like it's developing pretty fast down from san francisco over towards las vegas. for us, once that fog turns off. it will be sunny and breezy. lowell drizzle. it will gave way to -- local drizzle. it will gave way to sunshine. upper 70 a few 80s. here's sal. we're looking at traffic. i'm looking for the latest on the traffic in the east bay. this is westbound 24. remember, yesterday we had such a terrible day here. westbound 24 between pleasant hill road and the tunnel only 13 minutes and traffic is going to be better by the time you reach oakland. i also want to mention that the traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza has been slow, about a 25

to 30-minute delay with no major issues. as a matter of fact, if you are driving into san francisco the traffic does get better by the time you reach the city side. but there will be plenty of waiting here. someone just asked me about 880. the traffic on 880 southbound is still very heavy. they have opened the lanes. they opened the lanes a while peag. but traffic on 880 heading south out of san leandro to hayward is a terrible mess. i really can't recommend an alternate because everyone has thought of them. people are using the san mateo bridge, the dumbarton bridge, trying to get over to 101. this has had a terrible effect on the morning commute trying to get into the south bay from the east bay. let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. we're finding out more about an overnight fire in san francisco, one that sent a grandmother to the hospital. it happened at 1:00 a.m. at a home on miramar avenue. alex savidge has been on the story since 4:30. you are back now to tell us about the investigation. we want to know how the

grandmother is doing. good morning, ail legs. >> -- alex. >> reporter: dave, good morning to you. good news about the grandmother. she was taken to the hospital by firefighters after suffering smoke inhalation, but we can tell you, according to the family, she was released from the hospital just a few hours ago. the 77-year-old woman took in quite a bit of smoke when a fire broke out in her house around 1:30 this morning. this home is on the 500 block of miramar avenue. at the time. there were four people inside. all of them family members and they say they heard what sounded like an explosion or at least a loud boom coming from the ground floor of the garage and they quickly realized there was a fire in the home and they got out. firefighters knocked the fire down quickly and treated that elderly woman at the scene and ultimately took her to the hospital but it was a close call for this family and they are grateful everyone is now okay. >> 100%. everybody is okay. we paid the bills and have

insurance, of course. everything will be all right. >> along with the people who had to be rescued from this fire this morning, there was also one talk taken from the home by firefighters. that dog was giken oxygen because the dog took in smoke as well. a fire captain told me the cause of the fire remains unclear. but an arson investigator did come in to collect evidence to try to figure out how it started. but that's a standard procedure any time someone is hurt in a house fire. the family says they have insurance to cover the costs of repairs and they are planning to stay with relatives nearby for the time being. we're live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. there's a surprising new development in the case of a toddler killed in a hit-and-run accident in san francisco friday night. police have made an arrest. but it's not the driver. officers have taken the awpt of the 2-year-old girl into custody for the tragic incident in the city's south of market

neighborhood. police say 25-year-old lorysha gage walked into the middle. crosswalk against the light. she left the little girl unattended on mission street to go back to the curb and get the toddler's twin brother. >> the investigation showed some evidence that there was some child neglect that resulted in the death of the 2- year-old toddler. >> the little girl's aunt has been booked into county jail on felony child endangerment charges. police are looking for the hit- and-run driver who has been seen in a surveillance video. which is right there. it's a white or light colored 1990s model toyota camry, honda or lexus. the picture is a little blurry. the car has dark colored bumpers and rims. anyone with information is asked to contact san francisco police right away. 8:34. san jose police considering possible safety improvements after two serious hit-and-run

crashes on the same road in 24 hours. people who live on center road say speeding cars make that busy street unsafe, especially for kids. and they say many drivers race through their neighborhood, often ignoring people in crosswalks. a suspect is now in custody for monday night's hit-and-run crash on center road that critically injured one person. another man was killed just a block away on sunday night. now, the car involved is a white or light colored 1990s model toyota camry, a honda or lexus. the car has dark colored bumpers and rims. if you have any information, call the police. well, missouri state police are calling it a turning point after several nights of violent protests in ferguson, missouri. the demonstration started after the deadly police shooting of 18-year-old michael brown on august 89th. our reporter is -- august 9th. our reporter is in ferguson where a grand jury is hearing evidence in the case against officer darren wilson, the man

[chanting] >> reporter: no flash bombs for tear gas in ferguson, missouri last night. but a peaceful night still got- - got tense. police say demonstrators started to throw water bottles. at one point, a crowd jumped in to help the cops. >> these are stall steps. those small steps will turn into giant steps and those giant steps will be great strides for the communities. >> reporter: officers hit protesters with pepper spray and ordered everyone to leave. 47 people were arrested. the st. louis county prosecutor is preparing evidence for a grand jury that will decide whether officer darren wilson will be charged in the august 9th shooting of michael brown.

bay area. brian flores has more on how policeare also getting ready. he's live at novato high school where classes are already underway. >> reporter: yes, they sure are. classes here got started about 7:30 this morning. the elementary schools within the district are getting started right now the along with teachers and staff making their way back, so will law enforcement and they are warning drivers that traffic will be heavier around the schools today. wanted to show you what it looked like at 6:35 near the high school here. you may have saw many kids getting to school. a lot of parents dropping off their kids and quite a few drivers who may have been caught offguard and were caught in the slowdown of the first day of school around the streets. many school districts throughout the bay area, there was a heavy police traffic presence. they are looking for drivers who violate the rules of the road but the main concern is getting the kids to school safety also concern about traffic flow and that means not just concentrating their efforts to the streets in front of the school. >> it gets that way if you go

off at the marin humane society in the past couple of months. last week you saw brian reporting on an animal shelter on novato in its oversupply of cats. to show their gratitude, the shelter named this kitten in brian's honor. little brian flores will be available for adoption in the next couple of days. in fact, there are several cats available for adoption. and we hear that the original brian flores is considering giving the cat a home. his 3-year-old daughter told daddy, she would like to have the cat. this definitely isn't as cute as the kitten but check out this video. a reporter in new york said he was terrorized by this giant rat. he said he was reporting the rat when it started to run towards him. eventually it passed by possibly running between the reporter's leg.

welcome back. let's bring you up to date on some. top stories. a live picture of an israeli ship that's been the target of propalestinian protesters it's sailing out of the bay area. the protesters blocked that ship from unloading cargo from the port of oakland from last saturday until last night. we're not sure if the containers on the ship right now are the ones not unloaded in oakland or if they are new ones. just wanted to show you that there, live in san francisco bay. and in hayward, a person was hit and killed on interstate 880 earlier this morning. it's caused a major traffic problem. it happened about 5:15. sal says traffic is still

backed up. ktvu's tara moriarty is at the hayward police station where police are now investigating this, tara, as a possible homicide. good morning. >> yes. >> reporter: good morning. police are investigating this as a potential homicide. they say that the man on the freeway did jump. but whether -- but why he jumped could classify this as a suicide or a homicide. we'll just have to see. let's take a look at the video. we can show you this happened around 4:45 this morning. we can tell you that a man on the overpass at industrial boulevard over 880 southbound fell into traffic. a big rig driver struck him. he was instantly killed. officers say they do have a witness. they are looking into whether some sort of fight took place before the man jumped. we do not know his identity yet. traffic was snarled for three hours while police and the chp conducted an investigation. there is a homeless encampment nearby but police won't say if it's linked to this case. as sal mentioned.

of speed chase that ended with a crash into a coffee shop is caught on camera. people were sitting outside of fred's place when a car going about 70 miles an hour smashed into they're cars and then the coffee shop. the driver of the speeding car was fleeing sheriff deputies. he had a woman and 2-year-old boy in the crash. after the crash, he jumped out of car and tried to run. >> i saw him right here. he just. he looked nervous. and i thought there he is. there's the guy. we chased him back. he ended up going on the roof and we caught him. >> the suspect identified as to- year-old derrick mccann was caught by witnesses and held until police arrived. he was arrested on multiple felony charges. some injuries were reported but police say it's a miracle no one was killed. the giants may file a protest with major league baseball after a four and a half hour rain delay last night in chicago led to a giant loss. play was stopped in the fifth
